The Master Cleanse: Day 2
I’m hungry.
I’ve managed–to my dismay–to fight off those pesky hunger pains successfully until this very moment. Now I want nothing more than to devour a bowl of cereal mercilessly and pass out from the excitement of chewing. Instead, the cayenne pepper is burning the back of my throat and I can’t quite bring myself to do another ‘Salt Water Flush’, though I’m trying to keep a ‘Project Runway’ sort of mentality. As Ms. Heidi Klum would say, I’m either in or I’m out, which is actually pretty ambiguous, but serves purpose enough here.
I took a yoga class a few hours ago, which seemed like a bad idea, but I had slept for most of the afternoon and figured some light physical activity was just what my body needed. What it really ended up being was a distraction for an hour and a half, which brings me to my next point: as physically challenging as this cleanse has been, the mental games I’ve been playing are more exhausting than I could have ever imagined. Hunger, it seems, is one part physical and one-thousand parts mental. From the stray chip at the end of the snack table in my office to the extra yogurt off the edge of a cup onto my finger, I’ve been tempted on several occasions to snack without much of a thought.
And though this may seem like my subconscious working, it’s starting to worry me how detached from my hunger my eating in recent years has been. From a simple reflex of my hand to the burning of imagines in my brain, from commercials to actual real food, from smells to sounds that I associate with eating, my mind has been running laps around itself.
So, in conclusion, the ‘Cleanse’ may be–initially–about giving your bowels a break. However, I’ve decided that it’s my mind that needs the rest. I didn’t know eating could be so stressful (or not eating, for that matter).
(ps, I’ve decided to forgo the ‘Salt Water Flush’ for the night.)
