Day 25 – An Insight into the Master Cleanse
Today a look into a cleansing technique that, as the article describes, has brought clarity, freedom and life to a Tokyo Yogini’s path. 10 days on the magic potion – An Insight to The Master Cleanse by Em
Why did I choose to spend 10 days drinking salt water, squeezing lemons and talking about poop? I’m healthy, am a raw vegan yogini. Why should I want to cleanse? It’s nothing to do with the fact that Beyonce had tried and tested this cleanse (although I heard she had cheated and eaten salads throughout. Tut-tut)! I’d been through a tough few months, was feeling drained and had ventured into the place with the green mermaid for a soy latte on a couple of occasions in hope to reboot my battery.
The mermaid let me down. I was letting myself down.
So, I took the plunge and embarked on something that I said I would never do. Never say never eh?
What is the Master Cleanse?
A detoxification program devised my Stanley Burroughs where for 10 -40 days you drink a specially prepared potion (as I liked to call it), of freshly squeezed lemon juice, grade B maple Syrup, water and Cayenne pepper. Doesn’t sound too appetizing, but surprisingly it is. So much that two weeks after the cleanse I miss it.
There is plenty of information online and I highly recommend you do you research prior to embarking on program, therefore I will not discuss what needs to be done, just what I experienced.
Me, Myself and My Potion.
My typical day kind of panned out like this. Salt water flush (SWF), make potion for the day, bathroom, bathroom, bathroom, bathroom, drink potion, drink water, drink water, drink potion………laxative, bed.
I did keep to my regular yoga teaching schedule throughout.
The SWF was interesting and took a while to get used to. I’m used to the yogic kriya technique where you take in the salt water and then purge (do not try this unless guidance has been given). I’ve been doing this for a while now once or twice a week, but now the salt water was sitting in my tummy. I had a Buddha belly full of swishing water and I did not like. The first day it didn’t work at first and it was most uncomfortable, but days 2-10 I made friends with the toilet on many occasion. The SWF was doing its job. Oh, not only will you talk about poop, you will look and analyze.
The potion itself is very easy to make. I drank about 6-8 glasses a day, although day seven I started to drink less as my body wasn’t asking for it. Drank copious amounts of water, was constantly urinating. God knows how I made it through Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. Sat cross-legged for the last 30 minutes as I couldn’t miss the Dumbledore bit!!
Evenings you are asked to drink a laxative tea prior to sleep. I chose to use psyllium as I think it’s less harsh on your system. However, I don’t think it works as well as the tea from research I did.
No side effects except for the first evening when I had headaches and was tired. Slept for a whopping 14 hours. Not bad for someone who goes through bouts of insomnia. Bounced out of bed the next day like Tigger.
My body adjusted well to what was happening. I felt fabulous throughout. People commented on my clear skin. I toned a little bit more. In total I lost 5kg. I didn’t do it for the weight loss, so that was a bonus.
After months in a flunk, did the cleanse work its magic?
ABSOLUTELY.
The old Em is back. She feels alive. Her muscles have found new freedom, her yoga poses have gone deeper, she is thinking clearer and with more clarity and she looks damn sexy!!
No more visits to the green mermaid place for me…..
I’ll be doing the cleanse again from January 1st -10th before heading to Thailand to continue my yoga studies and devour durian. If you are at all interested in getting your New Year off to a great start please join me in the cleanse.
